Goodbye to the group and hello to Chiapas!

Thursday, March 4, 2010

Early morning, short flight, pretty bus ride, new city and new adventures!

There is something powerful about the women at the Abbey in Cuernavaca. Something about their purity and spirit always makes leaving difficult for me.

Our last night in Cuernavaca - a true Mexican Fiesta

Wednesday, March 3, 2010

When North Americans think about a night out or a party it usually consists of nice clothes, fancy cars, loud music, flashing lights, dance clubs, beer and booze. Today we did it a little differently.

A day with a street family and a visit to VAMOS

As always, today was a learning experience and another opportunity for us to grow. Just as we did last year, the Quest group met with members of the Lopez family. The Lopez lives in a small village with no running water or toilets and all work as street vendors, selling jewelery and baskets. Each year Quest meets with this family to discuss their life circumstances, conflicts and experiences and to sell us their work.

“No child should go hungry,” Reverend William B. Wasson.

Pequeños Hermanos y Hermanas, or Little Brothers and Sisters, was created by Reverend William B. Wasson with the hopes that no child should suffer or go hungry because they are poor. It officially became an organization 55 years ago.

I am sitting in the front yard of one of the largest churches I have ever seen. It is a pretty simple church with details around the entrance, but nothing spectacular on the outside. I am assuming that the inside is gorgeous, as they all are, but I believe there is a wedding starting soon since people keep heading in.

an update on a wonderful weekend

There was an accident in our town where we stay and the telephone polls were taken out, making access to the internet actually IMPOSSIBLE!!! So here is a quick update of our weekend.

______

Saturday was a free day for the group. Some went to a water park, some went to Taxsco- the land of silver, some went to Tepoztlan and one member of the group stayed behind and spent a day with the sisters. Of all the great experiences I feel hers was the greatest and most powerful. I will ask her to share her story on IDEALS.

Being invited to work. What does that mean?

It’s a little early, but there is a lot of preparation for today. We are going on a feena (pronounced fee ay na). We spent most of yesterday up in the mountains behind the Abbey in two small towns in the forest area they call the ‘Water Forest’. People in this town feel it their ancient and sacred duty to protect the environment. We need to learn from experienced people who have been doing this for centuries if we are going to figure out how to deal with things like climate change.

It’s been a busy couple of days. We left Wednesday night from the college cafeteria, and for a nice change it wasn’t an old yellow school bus. The students didn’t know what to expect, but I was certainly appreciative of some padded seats and a smooth ride to the airport. I knew where we were going such comfort was rare and it was a good way to start.
